The Genesis of Rasa / Rasanishpathi
Synopsis
Through the lens of Kathakali and drawing on principles from the Natyashastra, this film examines how movement, breath, and expression serve as conduits for deeper human feeling. Set in Kerala, the narrative follows two young girls as they undergo rigorous training in this classical art form. Their evolving relationship with performance—both as students and as receptive observers—forms the emotional arc of the film.
Moving between temple grounds, rehearsal spaces, performances, and conversations with master practitioners, the film traces how a tradition shapes and is shaped by the body, breath, and mind. As ancient characters come alive through elaborate rituals and deeply coded expressions, the girls find themselves drawn into a layered emotional vocabulary that transcends words.
