GIRMIT-The Fields of Sadness

Synopsis

Between 1879 and 1920, over 60,000 Indians were taken from Kolkata to Fiji under the British indenture system—deceived by false promises of prosperity. Instead, they endured 41 years of brutal labor, violence, and exploitation. Women suffered even more, facing abuse, hardship, and the loss of their newborns. Suicides were alarmingly high. Through rare archives and testimonies, this documentary uncovers their struggle, resilience, and the legacy that shaped a global Indian diaspora.
