The Car That Came Back from the Sea / The Car That Came Back from the Sea

Synopsis

Leszek left Poland in the 1980s and now looks back on his past when he was still young. He talks about his very first car, which was in pretty bad shape, and his friends who travelled to the Polish Baltic coast with him. The six friends are young, euphoric, want a better future and want to get away from Poland. As passports are hard to obtain, a trip to the Baltic Sea is all they need to get started. On their trip to the sea, they experience everyday life in Poland at the time: grocery shops that are completely empty, demonstrations by the Solidarność labour movement, Russian military bases in Poland, young adults leaving the country in their hundreds of thousands. And when martial law is declared, tanks and armed militia are on the streets. Nevertheless, life goes on. The texts are inspired by interviews I made with my relative’s.
