The Bum Festival / Kunde

Synopsis

The film is a sensory exploration of an age-old, annual ritual called the “Kunde Namme” (Bum Festival) practised by the Kuruba tribe of the Kodagu region of Karnataka. In a country dictated by conservative moral codes, the ritualistic festival discards perceptions of ‘decent’ social conduct. It turns on its head conventional views of sexuality and gender as the Kurubas become unselfconsciously gender fluid and uninhibited, in a vivid celebration of obscenity
