Invoking Justice / Invoking Justice

Synopsis

In some parts of southern India, Muslim family disputes are settled by Jamaats, which are all male bodies applying the Islamic Sharia law to cases without even allowing women to be present to defend themselves. Recognizing this fundamental inequality, a group of women in 2004 established a women’s Jamaat, which soon became a network of 12,000 members spread over 12 districts.
