Kerala an Example in Practicing Freedom of Expression:  Anand Patwardhan

Acclaimed filmmaker and the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), is impressed with the tolerance and artistic freedom that one enjoys in Kerala. The state, in fact, is an example in practicing Freedom of Expression, he said.

Known for his documentaries that frankly showcase the life, conditions and plight of the common people in India, Patwardhan is internationally celebrated for being a torch bearer of the people’s movement.

According to him, activism and film making mean the same for him, and his films are a result of this merging of meanings. “In the present social scenario of India, to express through art is a difficult task, but that is what we should do.” Patwardhan said.

AnandPatwardhan had recently returned his National Award as a protest, but he thinks it would be futile to do it again as the situations are only getting worse by the day. Selected films of Patwardhan are being screened at the festival under the category “Anand Patwardhan: Rebel with a Cause.”
